Another UPI Glitch Hits Users Nationwide: NPCI says working to resolve ‘Intermittent Technical Issues’

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) users across India faced major disruptions on Saturday, April 12, 2025, as the system experienced widespread transaction failures. This marks the second significant outage of the month, leaving many frustrated over declined payments and failed fund transfers.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees UPI infrastructure, acknowledged the hiccup after users flooded social media with complaints. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the NPCI said, “NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working to resolve the issue, and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused.”

According to outage tracking site Downdetector, trouble began around 11:50 a.m. on Saturday, with user complaints spiking to over 2,300 by 1 p.m. The majority 81%—reported payment failures, while 17% struggled with fund transfers, and 2% reported issues with purchases.

Many users shared screenshots of the error message: “Recipient’s bank network is down. You’re not able to make payment to your recipient’s bank. Please try paying to a different bank account.” Even basic transactions, such as small merchant payments or peer-to-peer transfers, were affected.

This incident follows a similar disruption earlier this month on April 2, when certain banks faced server latency—just a day after the financial year-end on April 1, a time often marked by routine backend updates and high-volume traffic.

Although the previous glitch was resolved swiftly, Saturday’s outage again raises questions about the reliability of digital payment infrastructure, especially as UPI continues to be the backbone of India’s cashless economy.

For now, users are advised to stay patient and explore alternate payment methods while the NPCI works on restoring full services.
