Sigma’s upcoming full-frame mirrorless camera, the Sigma BF, has already sold out in Japan prior to its official April 2025 release. This overwhelming demand highlights the anticipation surrounding this minimalist and innovative camera.
A Unique Approach to Camera Design:
The Sigma BF stands out with its radical simplicity. It features a true unibody design, milled from a single block of aluminum over seven hours, resulting in a seamless and rigid structure. The camera’s interface is equally minimalist, incorporating just three haptic-feedback buttons, a dial, and a shutter release, eliminating traditional controls like a hot shoe, electronic viewfinder, and even a memory card slot.

Impressive Specifications:
Despite its minimalist design, the Sigma BF doesn’t compromise on performance. It boasts a 24.6MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor, 230GB of internal storage capable of holding over 14,000 JPEGs or 4,300 RAW images, and supports 6K video recording with L-Log for enhanced dynamic range. The hybrid autofocus system can detect humans, dogs, and cats, ensuring accurate and reliable focusing.
Limited Production Capacity:
The camera’s intricate manufacturing process limits production to just nine units per day. Even with five months of pre-launch production, Sigma has only managed to produce around 1,500 units, making the BF one of the most exclusive cameras on the market.
A Philosophy of ‘Beautiful Foolishness’:
The name “BF” stands for “Beautiful Foolishness,” inspired by Okakura Tenshin’s “The Book of Tea.” Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki explains that the camera embodies the joy and simplicity found in everyday moments, encouraging photographers to appreciate the beauty in the mundane.
Global Availability:
Priced at $1,999, the Sigma BF is set to launch globally in April 2025, available in silver and black. Given the limited production and high demand, prospective buyers are advised to act quickly to secure a unit.
